Oral Hygiene Dietary Advice

By Lesley Bowman-Campbell, Dental Hygienist

Good Oral Hygiene is essential to prevent dental problems such as gum disease and tooth decay.

  • Dental plaque consists of bacteria and saliva present in the oral cavity. Within 24 hours it appears as a soft whitish deposit that forms on the surface of the teeth.
  • Calculus sometimes referred to as tartar is hardened calcified plaque. It attaches firmly to the teeth and can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist who use special instruments.
  • Gum disease means inflammation of the tissues that surround the teeth. Most cases of gum disease are plaque related. There are two types of gum disease:
  • Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease. It causes the gums to become red, swollen and bleed easily.
  • Periodontitis occurs if gingivitis becomes worse and progresses to destroy the surrounding tissue of the teeth such as the bone that holds the teeth in place.
  • Tooth decay is when holes form in your teeth. This is caused by bacteria from the mouth digesting sugar from food in your diet and producing acid.  It’s the acid that starts to destroy the enamel of your teeth.

To help prevent tooth decay you should eat a well balanced diet and limit the amount of sugary foods and drinks that you have.

If you are at risk of dental decay or have a heavily restored mouth your dentist or hygienist may recommend that you use an alcohol free fluoride tooth paste such as Braun Oral B.

We also recommend that a fluoride tooth paste is used.

At Chartwell Dental Care we understand that it is important to specifically tailor and monitor each of our individual patient requirements.

Our dentists and hygienists are only too happy to discuss these with you at your regular hygienist or Examination appointments.

We are also fully aware that due to the pressure of a busy lifestyle it is not always possible to follow dental advice to the letter and our team of dental professionals will offer ongoing support and assistance.
